The entrance to the Step Pyramid mortuary complex of Djoser, (2680 BC) Third Dynasty, Old Kingdom . The niched perimeter wall of fine quality white Tura limestone had fifteen gates, of which fourteen were fakes. Only this tower in the southeast corner led into the main mortuary complex. The impressive enclosure wall has been reconstructed to a height of 10.5 meters using the original ancient stones. This main gateway leads to an entrance hall 175 ft long, decorated with 36 fluted columns carved to resemble bundles of reeds. Beyond is the Great Courtyard in front of the Step Pyramid. The entire complex was built by Imhotep. |
