“The Great Pyramid” built by the Pharaoh “Kufu” in 2589 BC, the first Pyramid built at the Giza Plateau and the largest of all pyramids in Egypt. Kufu's Pyramid was the tallest building in the world for over 4000 years until 1889 when the “ Eiffel Tower ” was built in Paris . At an angle of 51 degrees, it exceeds 480 ft in height which makes it the tallest Pyramid in the world. Each side is 754 ft in length which gives it a footprint of over 7 city blocks at 568,500 sq ft. Only the "Pyramid of the Sun" at Teotihuacan in Mexico has a larger base. Inside, the Pyramid has 4 chambers, one of which is the King's burial chamber. Inside the chamber there is a solid Granite Sarcophagus which was used to hold Kufu's body as he awaited his ascension to heaven and unification with the gods. The Sarcophagus is larger than the entrance of the chamber, which means it was set in place while the Pyramid was still under construction. |
