Pyramid and mortuary complex of the Fourth Dynasty Kings “Khufu”, his son “Khafre”, and his son “Menkaure”. This site was chosen by Khufu, because of its superior bedrock's ability to support enormous weight, after lessons learned at Dahshur. Each Pyramid was part of a larger complex consisting of a Mortuary Temple , a Causeway, a Valley Temple and subsidiary Pyramids. Called “The Great Pyramid”, the Pyramid of Khufu is the largest at 481 ft. “Khafre's” Pyramid, which still has some of the original casing stones at its peak, appears taller even though it is over 10 ft shorter. This was done by design, built on higher ground to give the appearance of added height. The Pyramid of “Menkaure” is the smallest of the three at a little over 200 ft. They are Pyramids number 5, 6 and 7 in order of construction. |
