Giza (also Al Jizah City), a southwestern suburb of Cairo , is the third largest city in Egypt. An important city has been on or near this site since the time of the 4th Dynasty Old Kingdom, about 2575-2467 BC, the time of the Pyramids. Mostly a tourist and farming community today, it is home to many foreign embassies and government offices, diverse manufacturing facilities, and the new home to the University of Cairo (1908), relocated here in 1924. Population estimate over 4.5 million, it is a sister city to Los Angeles since November 1989. |
