The Khafre Pyramid is the second of the three Pyramids at the Giza Plateau. Built between 2558-2532 BC, the most distinctive feature of Khafre's Pyramid is the topmost layer of Tura limestone casing that still remains. They are the only remaining casing stones on a Giza Pyramid. Originally all three Pyramids at Giza were enveloped in smooth Limestone, but the casings were removed and the stones used to build some of the city's holy Mosques. The Pyramid is constructed of large Limestone block cut from a nearby quarry, and surrounded at the base by Red Granite from Aswan . Each Limestone block weighs 2.5 tons while some of the larger casing stones are more than 6 tons. At the base the Pyramid is 704 ft in length, and rises up to an original height of 471 ft. |
